The League of Utah Writers in celebration of their 85 years, put out a call for short stories and poetry to its members across the state. The theme they chose was The Function of Freedom. This was drawn from a quote from a great American novelist.
"The function of freedom is to free others."
--Toni Morrison
This collection of 32 poems and stories delve into the aspects of that theme. They cover different genres and styles. I am proud to say I'm included in this work. I think the other selections are better than mine.
The Function of Freedomis a collection of emotions. There is humor and horror. There are works that will make you cry, and others that will make you stop and think. You will find pieces reinforcing what you may already believe while others will raise new questions to ponder.
Each of us has hopes and desires. We have obstacles to overcome. Many of us are fighting our own shadows as we trek forward into a new day. We look for hope in what others have accomplished to free ourselves. These tales are about those successes we can look towards and those examples that are set.
The theme of this collection is that through helping others to become free from their hardship we free ourselves. This collection of works from Utah writers is about fulfilling those hopes and desires of others.
Each of these works is written with the hope it inspires another.
I recommend The Function of Freedom to everyone.
There is a content warning because of the wide scope of issues covered.
The authors who have been accepted in this work receive no payment for the books sold. The proceeds go to further the mission of the League of Utah Writers and the goals it has been pursuing since 1935.
